The Thing Nobody Tells You Before You Book Your Wedding Venue
There’s a moment I see at wedding fairs all the time.
A couple will stop at my stand, we’ll start chatting about their wedding plans, and I’ll explain what a Wedding Celebrant actually does.
Their eyes light up.
“Oh my god… THAT’S exactly what we wanted.”
And then comes the heartbreaking bit:
“We’ve already booked the registrar.”
Now, to be clear, this isn’t about “bashing registrars”. Many are lovely people doing a job within a very strict legal framework.
But what is frustrating is how many couples are never properly told there are different ways to get married in the first place.
Here’s the truth:
Lots Of Couples Don’t Even Realise A Wedding Celebrant Is An Option
In England, many wedding venues still naturally guide couples towards booking a registrar as part of the process.
Sometimes couples are actively encouraged to secure the registrar before they’ve even fully explored ceremony options. In some cases, it’s presented almost like it’s the only route available.
And honestly, I think that’s a real shame.
Because by the time many couples discover celebrant led weddings, they’ve already locked themselves into something that might not actually reflect who they are at all.
It’s a bit like spending thousands creating the wedding of your dreams… and then accidentally booking the basic version of a ceremony.
So… What Is A Wedding Celebrant?
A Wedding Celebrant is someone who creates and delivers a completely bespoke wedding ceremony centred entirely around you two.
Your story.
Your personalities.
Your weird in jokes.
Your emotional moments.
Your badly behaved dog that absolutely must be involved somehow.
Unlike a registrar ceremony, a celebrant led wedding isn’t restricted to standard scripts, rigid formats or legal wording.
Which means your ceremony can actually feel like you.
Mad concept, I know.
The Biggest Difference? Personalisation.
With a registrar, you’re generally choosing from approved wording and working within strict time slots.
With a celebrant?
The creative handbrake comes off completely.
Want laughter? Great.
Want emotion? Absolutely.
Want a surprise ring bearer hidden under a guest chair? Let’s cause chaos.
Want your guests crying one minute and snort laughing the next? Perfect.
Want your ceremony outdoors overlooking the sea, in a forest, in your mam’s garden, or halfway up a hill in Northumberland? Crack on.
A celebrant ceremony gives you freedom.
“But Isn’t The Legal Bit Important?”
Yes.
It’s just not usually the meaningful bit.
This is the part that initially confuses some couples in England and Wales, so let me simplify it:
The legal registration and the wedding ceremony do not have to happen together.
Most celebrant couples simply do the legal paperwork separately at a registry office with a basic “2+2” legal appointment.
No aisle.
No guests if you don’t want them.
No pressure to make it emotional.
Just the legal admin bit.
Then your actual wedding day becomes exactly that:
Your actual wedding day.
The day with the vows, the story, the atmosphere, the music, the emotion, the laughter and all your favourite people around you.
And hand on heart? I have never had a couple say:
“You know what we’ll remember forever? That ten minute legal appointment at the council office.”
Not once.
“Which One Counts As Our Real Wedding?”
Easy.
The one where you ugly cry during your vows and your Auntie Carol necks prosecco before midday.
That’s the one.
Nobody emotionally reminisces about signing a legal declaration in a beige municipal office beside a filing cabinet (true story at me and my missus’ 2+2!).
Your celebrant ceremony is the memory.
It’s the moment.
It’s the bit people talk about for years afterwards.
The Other Big Myth: “Celebrants Are Expensive”
This one genuinely surprises people.
Many couples assume a celebrant is some wildly extravagant luxury option reserved for celebrity weddings and people who own alpacas.
But once you compare actual registrar attendance fees at licensed venues, the difference is often far smaller than people expect.
And the experience itself is entirely different.
You’re investing in the bit that kick-starts the entire wedding day.
Your Ceremony Should Never Be “The Bit Before The Bar Opens”
And this is probably the biggest shift happening in weddings right now.
Couples are starting to realise the ceremony isn’t just the compulsory admin section before the drinks reception.
It’s the emotional heartbeat of the whole day.
It sets the tone for absolutely everything that follows.
A brilliant ceremony gets guests emotionally invested from the very beginning.
It creates atmosphere.
Energy.
Connection.
And honestly? It’s usually the part guests remember most.
So Before You Automatically Book A Registrar…
Just pause for a second.
Don’t be pushed into it just because the venue has said that’s their process.
Explore your options first.
Because if you’re spending thousands creating a wedding that reflects your personalities, your relationship and your story…
…you deserve a ceremony that does the same.
And if you’re reading this thinking:
“Oh no. We’ve already booked the registrar…”
Don’t panic.
Lots of couples still choose to keep the legal bit separate and bring in a celebrant afterwards for the wedding ceremony they actually wanted all along.
Trust me, you would not be the first.
Not even close.
And yes… Dorothy at the Town Hall will survive. 😉
